Google Favicon Requirements

Post by maksudasm »

This search engine is gradually starting to abandon the standard icon size of 16x16 pixels. Google indexes such icons, but they are not always displayed correctly and qualitatively. Google's main requirement for favicon size is a multiple of 48 (for example, 96x96 pixels). Most webmasters agree that when choosing the size of a website icon, it is worth focusing on Google's requirements.

The rest of the technical requirements of this search engine are simple:

The favicon must not contain images of obscene or offensive content.

The icon should match the amazon database style of the site, brand and the company as a whole.

Favicon must be unique. Copying other people's icons is prohibited.

Google indexing takes a little longer than Yandex. In addition, this search engine is especially slow to respond to frequent changes of icons on the site.

Indexing of favicons by search engines

Yandex favicon requirements
This search engine has a distinctive feature of icon indexing: if a site does not have one, the search engine will automatically select an image that it considers relevant to the topic of the resource.

Basic requirements for favicons from Google and Yandex:

Google prefers ICO and SVG formats (understands and recognizes PNG and GIF formats).

Yandex prefers the SVG format (it understands and reads ICO, PNG and even BMP formats – but it’s better not to experiment with it).

Animation is not recognized by either Google or Yandex, so it is better not to add it.

Today, favicons in these search engines are displayed not only in search results, but also in news.

Checking favicon for errors
The main reasons why the icon may not be displayed:

Get clients from the site every month

Browser page caching: To fix the problem, you need to clear the cache and refresh the page (the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl + F5" will help you do this directly on the page).

The icon size or format does not match the browser requirements: check that it meets all technical requirements set by the browser.

Incorrect placement of favicon in code: check that the site icon is placed inside the <head> tag.

Insufficient time for indexation: in rare cases it can take up to two months.

The robots.txt file contains a restriction on favicon indexing: correct the file to specify "Allow: favicon.ico".

Prohibited symbols or inappropriate images: Check if your site icon contains any prohibited symbols or inappropriate images.

Poor image quality: Search engines sometimes ignore low-resolution icons.

Copied favicon: remember that it must be unique and not borrowed from someone else.

The website has filters applied: check your analytics systems for messages from search engines about problems on the resource.

If you cannot find the reason why your favicon is not displayed, try checking your icon for validity and display in a special online service, for example, Favicon Checker - it will test your icon and report any existing problems.

Today, the practice of using favicons is not very common. Because of their size, many do not consider it necessary to pay much attention to them. However, a well-drawn, clear and catchy favicon can become part of your corporate style, increase the trust and loyalty of site visitors and even become an indicator of your company or brand.
