We will start this article from the beginning, before we can know what this Google update consists of, we have to start by explaining what Penguin is.
In order to improve search results, Google launched an improvement to its algorithm in 2012, which it called Penguin. With this change, the internet giant intended to fight against fraudulent link building techniques by penalizing those links obtained in an unnatural way (paying) and rewarding the quality of the links over the quantity of them.
With the arrival of Penguin, thousands of websites were severely usa phone number list and saw firsthand (or wired) how their traffic decreased drastically due to the large number of low-quality links they had been obtaining. Since then, the algorithm has been updated with the sole purpose of fighting spam and bad links.
Since Google launched Penguin in 2012, there have been several versions and updates that have been launched:
Penguin 1.0 in April 2012
Penguin 1.1 in May 2012
Penguin 1.2 in October 2012
Penguin 2.0 in May 2013
Penguin 2.1 in October 2013
Penguin 3.0 in October 2014
As you can see, the search engine has been resting on its laurels for two years.
It's been almost a year since Google announced that its Penguin 4.0 update was going to be released, but it wasn't until 23rd September that it was actually launched. You may have noticed a different behaviour in your website's traffic since then. If so, we may be looking at the culprit.
In short, Penguin 4.0 is the latest Google update that could be defined as the introduction of the Penguin algorithm into the search engine's "core" algorithm in such a way that Penguin data is updated in real time.
Until now, for Google Penguin to be "aware" of any modification or improvement that the webmaster made to his website, a new Penguin version update was practically necessary. From now on, and because Penguin is now going to be part of the heart of the algorithm, these changes will be updated in real time.
But... what does it mean that Penguin is now at the heart of Google's algorithm? This means that your online store can be penalized immediately if you do Black Hat SEO practices, but you can still recover very quickly from any penalty you have suffered if it is corrected. Ultimately, it will influence the more than 200 criteria that form part of the Google algorithm.
Another great advantage that this change offers us is that now Google will no longer penalize an entire domain for a bad practice, but will only penalize the URL that is the object of the bad practice, so that now any penalty will not affect your entire ecommerce or online store, but only the page or pages in question. Let's take an example: if someone (or yourself) has linked a specific URL of your online store on a web page penalized by Google, Google will remove from its search results the keywords for which that specific URL is positioned, but it will not remove the entire web page. That is, if you sell cars and Google penalizes the URL of the Opel Corsa model for a bad practice, the rest of the models will not be affected.
With all these changes, the good practices we carry out on our website or online store will be rewarded almost immediately, which is a relief for all of us who work hard on organic positioning.
