About two years ago, the most visionary players in the digital economy were paying homage to the metaverse , the technology that was supposedly going to turn everything upside down and cause a revolution in the digital ecosystem similar to that caused by the network of networks. The increasingly ubiquitous artificial intelligence (AI) has, however, ended up relegating the metaverse to the background, whose future is rather uncertain. In fact, today the technology that has the most chances of prevailing in the future is AI , according to a recent study carried out in Germany by YouGov and DE-CIX .

41% of the 2,132 people surveyed in that report predict that AI will be the most relevant technology of the future , leaving the metaverse that once fascinated the "techie" industry in the background.

in recent months thanks in large part to the furious arrival on the scene of OpenAI's chatbot ChatGPT . Microsoft has also invested billions of dollars in integrating OpenAI technology into its Bing search engine, which could threaten the internet giant Google's supremacy in search. The Mountain View company has counterattacked, however, by lifting the curtain on its own chatbot, dubbed Bard , and extensively integrating AI into its search engine and other services of the group.

The current hype around AI is stealing the spotlight from the topic that was dominating the techie scene a couple of years ago: the metaverse . This concept refers to a digital and interactive environment where the user can explore using virtual reality glasses. In this environment, users can work, play, shop and undertake a whole host of other activities using virtual avatars. The metaverse also includes applications in which digital information is displayed in the user's field of vision with the invaluable help of augmented reality.

Although this technology looks extremely promising on paper, only 14% of consumers believe that the metaverse will be a prevalent technology in the future.

In the eyes of users, technologies directly related to the concept of "smart home" have a greater future. 40% of consumers are fully convinced that this technology, which aims to automate and make processes in their homes more efficient, will be very important in the future.

However, concepts such as digital health (28%), smart cities (24%) and autonomous cars (24%) are less popular.

59% of respondents, however, emphasise that the Internet must be expanded to adequately meet the requirements of new technologies. Furthermore, 51% of consumers wish to benefit from lower costs for Internet connections in the future, although 20% are willing to pay more to access a better quality connection.
