How to calculate ROI in Excel
Below we give you a step-by-step guide on how to calculate your ROI with Excel. If you can open a spreadsheet right now to practice, even better.
Step 1 : Label the columns to make it easier to identify the information
Label the first column (A1) “Investment Name,” then label the following columns (B, C, and D) “Investment Amount,” “Profit,” and “ROI,” respectively. Press Enter and move to the next line to enter information about your investments.
Step 2: Enter the information corresponding to the headers on the second line of your spreadsheet
Briefly describe the investment you made in cell A2.
In the “Investment Amount” column (cell B2), include all costs related to the investment, such as taxes, fees, and upfront payments.
In the “Profit” column (cell C2), record the total profit you made as a direct result of that investment. Profit is the amount you made above the total investment amount. You can calculate ROI on a weekly, monthly, or yearly basis.
Step 3: Calculate your ROI by dividing the profit by the investment amount
Write this formula in the “ROI” column (cell D2) so that the calculation is performed automatically: “=C2/B2” (without quotes)
Step 4 : Once you have performed the first ROI calculation, enter your next investment on the next line.
One of the main purposes of calculating ROI is to compare your investments to determine which ones are most profitable.
When you get to cell D3, select cell D2, click and hold the small square in the bottom right corner of the cell, and drag it down with your mouse. This will copy the formula from the first entry to the rest of the ROI cells in the spreadsheet.
