Method 1: Use keyboard shortcuts to underline and align text
To underline or align text in WordPress, you don’t need a plugin or toolbar icon. Just use the keyboard shortcuts.

To underline text, simply select the text you want to underline in WordPress and press Ctrl+U (on Windows) or Command+U (on Mac). This keyboard shortcut works in both the Block Editor and the Classic Editor.

There's another keyboard shortcut for aligning text. Just select the text and press Shift+Alt+J (on Windows) or Command+Option+J (on Mac) to align the text.

However, the key combinations for aligning text only work in the classic editor. If you use the block editor, you will not be able to adjust the text using keyboard shortcuts and must use the plugin method below.

If you want to add underline and align text buttons in block editor, this method is for you.

First, you need to install and activate the Gutenberg Block Editor Toolkit - EditorsKit plugin. For more details, check out our step-by-step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Once activated, the plugin will automatically provide underlining, alignment, and other formatting features when using the WordPress block editor.

These additional icons cannot be added directly to the block editor toolbar, but additional options can be found by clicking the "See more block tools" down arrow in the toolbar.

To underline text, you must first select it with the mouse. Then click the "Show More Block Tools" down arrow and click "Underline" from the drop-down menu.

To align a paragraph, first make sure your cursor is within the paragraph. Then click the "See more blocking tools" down arrow and select "Align" from the drop-down menu.
